Cody pulled up outside the bunkhouse in Rock Creek and swung down as the other rider galloped out on the run. Quickly taking care of his horse he headed for the bunkhouse and opened the door nervously.

Jimmy sat at the table with Noah and Buck, “Where’s Kid?” he asked. He thought if she was home, Lou would be with him and he didn’t want her mad at him when he gave them the news he had.

“Down at his thinking spot.” Buck replied, “Lou’s still on a run, but she’ll be back after supper.”

“Thanks.” Turning Cody headed down to the pond, he only hoped Kid had Katy otherwise he wouldn’t know where to look for him. Sighing in relief he spotted the speckled mare and headed for her. “Kid? You down here?” he called.

“What do you want Cody?” Kid snapped, he wasn’t too keen on company. He missed Lou, and since they’d been talking things were starting to look up.

“I need to talk to you?” Cody replied patting the mare.

Rising Kid turned to his friend with slight frown, “What is it Cody?”

“I’ve got some bad news.” Cody started and froze at the paler on Kid’s face.

“Lou?” Kid gasped moving toward Katy at a run.

“Is fine as far as I know.” Cody shrugged apologetically holding Katy’s reins, “No this concerns her, but isn’t about her. Apparently there was an attack on the orphanage in Saint Jo, it was burnt to the ground.”

“Survivors?”

“No.” Cody shook his head sadly, “As far as everyone knows there weren’t any. The local law officer is blaming the Indians.”

“What Indians? There aren’t any around Saint Jo.” Kid said grabbing the reins for his mare, “Lou’s due back from Blue Creek. I’ll ride out and meet her.”

“You sure? I mean you could just wait for her to get here.” Cody suggested as Kid swung up onto Katy’s back and gathered his reins.

“Tell Teaspoon and Rachel where I went. Lou’ll probably want to go to Saint Jo, I’m going with her.” Kid ordered as he galloped off down the path.

Cody shook his head, he was glad it was Kid going to tell her. Ever since she’d thrown a pot at his head because he’d said she needed to learn how to cook like a woman should he had a healthy fear of her temper. Heading back to the bunkhouse he wondered what Rachel was making for supper.

Lou glanced around at the sound of fast moving hoof beats and noted a familiar horse in the distance. The way he was riding Kid must be in a hurry she thought as she nudged Lightening into a lope and headed to meet him.

“Hey Kid! Where are you off to in such a hurry?” Lou inquired with a half smile. He looked like he’d just come from his thinking spot. Even his gun was still slug over his saddle horn.

“To meet you.” Kid replied slowing Katy to a walk as Lou slowed her horse.

“I’d have been back by supper.” Lou said slightly pertubed, “You couldn’t wait until then?”

“Cody brought some news back. Figured you would want to know right away.” Kid said as he swung down and held Lightening’s head for her to dismount.

Lou frowned at Kid she didn’t like him getting off the mare. Something was wrong, “What happened? Did someone get hurt?”

“Let sit down for a minute.” Kid led her to the nearest fallen tree and sat down next to her. Fixing his gaze on the two horses he took a deep breath. “There was a fire at the orphanage..” he started.

“Jeremiah? Theresa?” Lou whispered fearfully.

“There weren’t any survivors Lou.” Kid said pulling her close as she started to rock sobbing brokenly. “I’m so sorry Lou.” he whispered, brushing the dark hair from her face as he rocked her.

“What happened?” Lou asked quietly a few minutes later.

“Someone attacked them, the local sherif is saying it was Indians.” Kid said, “Other than that I don’t know. Cody didn’t have too many details.”

“I’ve got to go.” Lou rose quickly grabbing the trailing rein from her black mare, “I’ve got to find out what happened.”

“I told Cody to tell Teaspoon and Rachel where we were headed.” Kid said as he swung onto Katy, “I figured you would want to go straight away.”

Lou smiled shakily at him, “Thanks.” Spurring their horses the pair galloped back along the trail Lou had been riding down only minutes earlier.

Teaspoon stared at Cody who was busy filling his face, “What?” He demanded he could have sworn Cody said Lou and Kid ran off together.

“Kid said to tell you Lou and him were headed for Saint Jo.” Cody repeated, “He didn’t say how long they’d be gone.”

“Why are they going to Saint Jo? Was there a problem with Jeremiah or Theresa?” Teaspoon demanded taking Cody’s plate.

“I already told you Teaspoon, the orphanage burnt to the ground.” Cody looked pained at the thought of someone holding his food away from him, “Kid figured she’d want to go directly to Saint Jo so he said that..”

“Cody sometimes I think, your mother should have thrown you out and kept the bath water.” Teaspoon snapped.

“Ain’t my fault Lou has a temper, if’n I’d have told her she’d have killed me for sure. Her being so close to the Kid I thought it best he tell her.” Cody said snatching his plate back.

“Should we go after them?” Jimmy asked concerned for his friends.

“Nope.” Cody replied, “If they need us they’ll send for us. Until then we should just sit tight and wait.”

Rachel shook her head at Cody, “Teaspoon she’s got to be devastated. Who knows what she’s going to do?”

“Nothing.” Buck replied, “Kid’s there. He’ll keep her grounded, and if he can’t he’ll back her up.”

“That’s just what I’m afraid of. When it comes to Lou, Kid tends to be a little hot headed.” Teaspoon shook his head, “But until we know what happened or they send word, we can’t do a damn thing.”

“So we just sit and wait?” Buck asked quietly.

“We just sit and wait. Prayin’ a little wouldn’t hurt anything.” Rachel said glancing at the boys.

“We’ll just keep doing the runs, if we have to go we’ll go.” Teaspoon glared at Cody, “What were you thinking telling the Kid? You knew he’d go after her.”

“Yep.” Cody admitted, “Better his skull getting cracked then mine.”

“Ooh Cody sometimes I’d like to take you out and shoot you.” Jimmy snapped.

“What?” Cody glanced around the table, “You all know as well as I do that they’ve been getting real friendly lately. Kid’s always been there for her, why should now be any different?”

“Shut up Cody.” Teaspoon ordered reaching for his coffee cup, “You might actually make sense then I’d be worried.”

Lou stared at the flames of the campfire from were she sat leaning against Kid, she should have been there for them. She should have gone back sooner, maybe if she had’ve they’d still be alive.

“It wasn’t your fault Lou.” Kid said rubbing her arm, “You had no way of knowing who would want to attack an orphanage. We’ll find out who did it then we’ll bring them to justice. I promise Lou, I’m not going to let them get away with this.”

From out of range of the fire an aging black man listened to the conversation and smiled, these must be the pair he’d be sent for. Urging his worn out grey mule forward he advanced toward the camp, “Hello in the camp.” he called, he wouldn’t want to get shot delivering a message from Miss Harrison. Wouldn’t be proper to get killed before he done his job.

Kid jerked upright and withdrew his gun and Lou grabbed for hers, “Who’s there?” Kid demanded as aging grey mule walked into the firelight. A grey haired black man who looked like he’d been around a few years smiled at them with warmth.

“Just an old man looking for a warm fire to sit beside.” he said, “My names Moses.”

“Get down you’re welcome to share our fire.” Lou said relaxing back against Kid her thoughts turning to her sister and brother.

“Thank you. That’s right nice of you folks.” Moses quickly stripped the harness from his mule and joined them by the fire. After taking a cup of coffee he glanced at them and half smiled, “I’ve been looking for a young couple. Maybe you know of ‘em?”

“Who are they?” Kid asked, “We travel a bit so we might.”

“The feller’s name is the Kid, and the woman’s name is Louise?” Moses said, “I don’t recollect a last name for them. The sprite back at the ranch told me they were her sister and brother in law. My mind’s not quite what it used to be.”

Lou tensed and glanced at Kid, “What are you talking about? We heard the orphanage was burnt down to the ground.”

“It was.” Moses chuckled, “Miss Harrison she snuck everyone out right after dark. See the men had been there early and threatened everyone. Miss Harrison figured it best to get the children out.”

“Where is this Miss Harrison.” Lou asked as Kid squeezed her hand in encouragement. She refused to allow herself to feel hope until she knew what was happening with her siblings.

“Well if’n you’re either the Kid or Louise I’ll tell you. If you’re not I ain’t about to say.” Moses replied taking another drink of coffee.

“We are Kid and Louise.” Kid snapped, “Where is Miss Harrison? More importantly where are the children?”

“Well, Miss Harrison she said to ask you a question only you two would know the answer to. Something that Theresa or Jeremiah would know the answer to.” Moses glanced at the couple, “What’s Kid’s horse’s name?”

“Katy.” Kid responded instantly, “Why?”

“That’s an easy one.” Moses watched them, he knew Miss Harrison was expecting them tomorrow night, “What’s Louise’s mother’s name?”

“Mary Louise.” Lou replied quickly.

Moses nodded and grinned, “We’ll leave at first light. Give my mule a chance to catch his breath.”

Kid and Lou nodded at the old man and turned their attention back to the flames.

Sunrise came early and Lou was awake before the two men. Shaking Kid awake they set about making coffee just as the old man woke and grinned at them, “You didn’t take any food stuffs with you when you left did you?”

“No sir.” Lou replied. “We had other things on our minds.”

“No matter.” Moses said reaching into the satchel he carried, he extracted the corn bread he’d packed and tossed them a chunk, “Here, it ain’t as good as Miss Harrison’s but it’ll do.”

The trio ate in silence and drank the coffee before heading out on the trail.

By mid-day Moses was pulling his mule to stop, shifting he pointed to a notch in the cliffs, “Through there you’ll come across a road. Follow it, till you get to a big stand of pine. Turn left and two miles further you’ll come across the ranch house. Can’t miss it. You’ll find Miss Harrison there, and she’ll tell you where the young ‘uns are.”

“Thank you.” Lou smiled and nudged Lightening forward. Kid followed her quickly with a smile and a goodbye for the old man. Trotting along the trail, they followed the old man’s directions all day until they topped a rise and pulled up. Sitting below them was a huge house that sprawled out across a wide open space. It was lit up with lanterns and they could see children racing around in the yard. A moment later a bell rang and the children scampered inside.

“Well we’ve come this far. Might as well finish this. Find out what we can.” Kid stated.

“Come on.” Lou said as she turned Lightening’s head and they headed down the trail that led to the yard.

From the front porch Rebekah Harrison watched the two riders coming. She knew that Moses must have sent them, for they were coming in the back way. Glancing at the open door she nodded, the woman that had been standing there quickly scurried off.

When the rider’s got closer she smiled, the young man was familiar he looked like her husband only younger. Too bad the man had fallen in with a bad crowd she thought, Jed had been an absent husband for most of the eighteen months they’d been married. When she’d heard he’d been killed she had just shrugged, she’d mourned for him before he was dead, now it wasn’t worth it to cry over a man she’d lost months before.

“Hello.” As soft as a feather her voice reach Lou and Kid as they pulled up and swung down, “You must be Kid and Louise?”

“Yes we are. Moses sent us.” Kid stated. The woman couldn’t have been more than a few years older than Lou, but she looked twice as tough.

“I know. I sent him.” Rebekah said, “Please come in. The boys will see to your horses.” Turning Rebekah headed for the study, she knew the children would be joining them in due time and she wanted to talk to the young couple before they did.

Sitting behind her desk she glanced at Kid, “You remind me of someone.” She stated calmly.

“Oh?” Kid glanced at Lou with a shrug, “I don’t know why. We’ve never met.”

“You wouldn’t happen to be related to Jed Carson would you?” She sat back watching the boy’s face pale. When he glanced at Lou and nodded she shook her head. “Another lie.”

“Pardon?” Lou could see how rattled Kid was and had to smile, at least now she knew his last name.

“Jed said he was an only child.” Rebekah shrugged, “Doesn’t matter. I’m Rebekah Harrison nee Carson. Jed’s widow.” She explained before turning her attention to the papers in front of her.

“I didn’t know he’d taken a wife.” Kid said quickly.

“I didn’t know he had a brother.” Rebekah replied. “Or for that matter such a beautiful sister-in-law.”

Lou glanced at Kid she hadn’t paid much attention when she’d heard Moses say they were married, now this woman was saying it. While she’d been thinking about it, she hadn’t realized that someone would think she was married.

“Theresa told me. How romantic to get married in Saint Jo with only your siblings and close friends in attendance. My wedding was lavish to say the least.” Rebekah flipped through the papers before she found what she was looking for. “I received this two days ago. It’s a notice that is notarized that says one Mr. Boggs signed away his two remaining children Theresa Boggs and Jeremiah Boggs in Lue of a debt owned to one Morgan Charlten as of the fifteenth day of May 1861 if his account was not settled before then.” Rebekah glanced up at the gasp from across her desk and smiled sadly, “ I take it you were not aware of your late father’s business dealings.”

“Not that one.” Lou snapped angrily as she rose to pace the confines of the room. “But it doesn’t surprise me one little bit. He’d sell his own mother if he thought he could make a buck.”

“There are documents that dispute this claim.” Rebekah said, “The only problem is I’m not sure if the parties involved were aware of what they were signing.”

“What do you mean?” Kid demanded. He didn’t like this one little bit, something told him he was going to regret asking this question and an uneasy feeling settled in the pit of his stomach.

“Several months ago a young man was visiting the orphanage. This young man took Jeremiah and Theresa out to lunch and a local swimming hole. Before the trio left for the day, the sisters in a rush handed him a piece of paper to sign. They said that it was to say he was responsible for the children on this particular day.” Rebekah smiled calmly as Kid began to pale.

“So? What does that have to do with disputing the claim this Charlten man has?” Lou snapped uneasily.

“Normally, nothing. However the papers are dated before the date Charlten was to take possession of the children therefore he has no legal grounds to claim them. That doesn’t mean he won’t try to take them.” Rebekah stated quickly, “It just means he’d have to do it illegally.”

“What did these papers say?” Kid asked. He wasn’t sure he wanted to know, if his suspicions were correct Lou was going to kill him. Silently he prayed it was a quick death.

“They were adoption papers. When the children’s sister signed similar papers prior to this particular visit, there was no contesting them. Legally, the children belong to a Mr. K Carson.”

Kid stared at the woman across from him and shook his head, “That isn’t funny.” he croaked waiting for Lou to kill him.

“Perhaps not. But as the legal guardian of the McLoud children and as such you can contest Charlten’s claim.” Rebekah leaned back in her chair and watched Kid go deathly pale and Lou go a livid red.

“What do you mean I signed away any right to Theresa and Jeremiah?” She demanded focusing on the only thing that she’d heard clearly. When she found K. Carson she’d kill him.

“You signed papers to say he could legally adopt them.” Rebekah laughed softly, “I’d say you two have some talking to do. I’ll have Maurice show you upstairs after you’ve had a chance to talk privately. Dinner’s in an hour. The children will of course join us.”

Rising Rebekah left the room closing the door quietly on her way out.

Kid glanced at Lou and cringed, “Uh Lou.”

“I’m going to kill him.”

“Who?” Kid asked quickly wondering who she was talking about.

“K. Carson is who. How could the sisters allow him or anyone for that matter to just take the children out for the day? He just walked in and signed papers to take Jeremiah and Theresa away from me.” Lou snarled, “I should never have signed anything. If I hadn’t then this wouldn’t be happening.”

Raking a hand through his hair Kid rose and walked to the window, he didn’t want to be within striking distance when he told her who K. Carson was. “I know who he is.”

“Who is he? Where is he?” Lou whirled to face Kid.

“He is me.” Kid glanced at Lou and turned back to the window. He didn’t want to see the look of betrayal in her eyes when his words sunk in. Silently kissing any hope for a future with her goodbye he waited for the explosion.

Lou stared at Kid for a moment before sitting down, “But why?”

“I didn’t know I was signing adoption papers.” Kid replied studying the landscape, “The sisters told me it was routine for visitors to sign out the children. Besides I’m not that good at reading so I just signed them and forgot about them.”

Lou stared at him, he’d adopted her brother and sister. He’d always said that it didn’t matter that they were a package deal, he liked her brother and sister, she knew he stopped in to see them whenever he was in Saint Jo. Sinking into a nearby chair she watched the Kid looking out the window with a defeated set to his shoulders

“I’m sorry Lou. If I had’ve known.” Kid stopped and shook his head, “No it wouldn’t have made a difference. I still would have signed. I knew you were worried about them all the time. I guess I should have spent more time learning to read I guess.”

“Kid?” Lou took a deep breath trying to understand what she’d been told. “What were you doing visiting them, when the papers were signed you and I weren’t riding double?”

“I happen to like them. They’re fun to be around, besides they’re a part of you. Why wouldn’t I want to be around them?” Kid said turning to face her head on.

Lou studied her boot for a moment, “You mean to tell me that you would have taken them on even if you and I hadn’t gotten back together?”

“Of course.” Kid shrugged, “Just because you might not feel about me the way I feel about you doesn’t matter. I love Theresa and Jeremiah for who they are. That’s why I’ve been sending them money and stuff. It just made more sense to around them than to turn my back on them.” Kid admitted with a sheepish shrug. “I’m sorry Lou. I don’t regret adopting them, I just hope you can forgive me.”

Lou looked at him and smiled sadly, “There isn’t anything to forgive. As long as you’re sure you don’t mind being responsible for two young children.”

“No. As long as you don’t mind.” Kid shrugged and smiled softly, “I love you, and I love them. For me it works.”

Lou smiled and walked up to him. She noted the flash o fear in his eyes and shook her head, Reaching up she pulled him close and kissed him softly, “Then I guess you’ve got a ready made family don’t you?” Laughing at him she turned just as the doors opened and a plump woman with grey hair smiled at them.

“Miss Harrison says to show you to your room.” The woman turned and led the way up the stairs. When she opened one door Kid looked at Lou with a near tortured look, it was a single room with a massive bed sitting in the middle.

“This our room?” Lou croaked.

“Yep. Someone will be up to fill the tub for a bath if you like, you need anything else you just let us know.” the woman smiled again, “It’s nice to see young folk who aren’t trying to pawn off their siblings. Theresa swore you’d be by to get them. Wouldn’t believe otherwise.” Turning the woman scurried off leaving Lou and Kid standing staring at the bed.

“You can have the bed.” Kid muttered, “I’ll sleep on the floor.”

Turning to face Kid Lou shook her head, “Nonsense. You’ll sleep in bed with me. I’ll try to control myself.” Lou teased him.

“It isn’t your control that worries me.” Kid admitted, “I’m not sure about mine.”

Lou shrugged, “Oh well. We’ll work on it. I didn’t bring any dresses so I guess I’ll have to get someone to wash my clothes out. I’m up for a bath.” Glancing at him she noted his paler, “Kid it isn’t like you’ve never see me without clothes on before.”

“Yeah but.” Kid protested as the door opened and a burly fellow came in with a tub of water followed by a young girl with a stack of towels.

“Thank you.” Lou said, “I was wondering if someone could wash our clothes while we have a bath.”

“Certainly. Just drop them down that chute there,” The girl pointed to a small door in the wall, “And help yourself to clothes from the closets. I’m sure you can find something to wear until you’re clothes are done.” With a shy smile she closed the door and left them.

Quickly turning away from Lou who’d started to unbutton her shirt, Kid struggled to hide the reaction he had to Lou being within touching distance and naked at that.

“You gonna share the bath with me or bathe in cold water?” Lou laughed as Kid tensed.

“That isn’t fair Louise.” Kid snapped, “You know how much..”

“Kid get in the tub.” Lou order.

Still mumbling a protest but not wanting to make her mad, Kid did as he was told, stripping down to his longjohns before heading for the tub, “Kid the long johns have got to go.” Lou said with a smile as he turned away from her and stripped down before quickly getting into the tub of hot water.

Dinner was a pleasant experience for Kid, Theresa and Jeremiah were full of questions about what Lou and he’d been doing and how everyone was. Their hostess was a warm and genial host who allowed the children room to express themselves yet managed to keep them from saying something totally inappropriate.

When dinner was over Rebekah rose and smiled at the children, “Off to bed with both of you. Kid and Louise will be here for a while. Its time you were sleeping.” She held up her hand as the pair made to protest, “Now or you’ll not be going to the swimming hole before your lessons tomorrow.”

Quickly bidding them all goodnight the youngsters followed Maurice out of the room and down the hall.

“Such lovely children. You must be very proud of them.” Rebekah said sadly.

“Yes I am.” Lou glanced at the woman, “Why did you help them? Most people wouldn’t have bothered to help orphans like you did.”

“I’m childless. Giving them a place to stay and what little help I can allows me to feel like I’m doing something of worth. Being a widow I can’t adopt a child they won’t allow me to so I help out when and where I can.”

“We need to find a way to stop Mr. Charlten from taking the children.” Kid said as he glanced at Lou. He knew she was worried about that, they’d discussed it while sharing a bath.

“The local sheriff won’t do anything. He’d just as soon look the other way. I fear unless I call in some friends of mine we may not be able to.”

“Who are your friends?” Lou asked.

“Hired guns.” Rebekah stated, “Men who are just as unsavory as those that we’re trying to stop. I know these men Louise they won’t stop. When they realize the children are safe and where they are. You can bet they’ll come for them. I don’t know how to stop them from killing everyone and just taking what and who they want.” Rebekah stared at her coffee, she wished now she’d learned how to use a gun from Destardi when she’d offered. Shaking her head, she turned back to her guests living in the past didn’t to any good.

“What about Teaspoon and the boys?” Kid asked suddenly, “They’d help.”

“I don’t know? Having never met them I can only go on your opinion. If you think they could assist perhaps it might be a good idea to contact them.”

“Sure. Send a letter to the Marshall of Rock Creek. He’ll get the boys and they’ll come.” Lou said following Kid’s thinking. “That’s Jimmy, Cody, Buck, Noah and Teaspoon. That makes five more guns. And Kid and I can both shoot straight that makes seven. We all have a personal stake in this.”

“I’ll get word to them first thing in the morning. Perhaps you should write the letter if he received it in familiar writing then it would be better don’t you think?” Rebekah noted the soft look Lou sent to Kid without him being aware and smiled.

“I’ll write it now. You have a pencil and paper.” Lou said as she pushed her plate out of the way. A moment later she put them to use in a brief but obvious note for Teaspoon.

“If anyone sees this besides Teaspoon they’ll think I’m his daughter.” Lou explained passing it to Kid.

Kid picked it up and started reading, “If he doesn’t clue in you’re gonna give the poor man a heart attack.” Kid laughed.

“It’ll get him here. I told him to meet Moses as the old barn near Rusty Falls. Does Moses know where that is?” Lou asked glancing at Rebekah.

“Certainly. I’ll have a rider take it to the nearest way station right now. That way he’ll get it even sooner.”

Lou sealed the letter and handed it to her hostess before rising, “I think I’m gonna turn in. It’s been a long day.”

“You’ll find a nightgown on the bed.” Rebekah noted Lou take a hold of Kid’s are and drag him out of the room. Smiling to herself she realized that unlike his brother Kid loved his wife.

Closing the bedroom door Kid turned to Lou who had started to unbutton the dress she’d borrowed. Gulping he turned away and started to unbutton his shirt.

A moment later the lamp went out and he sighed as he quickly stripped, his long johns had gone down the laundry chute and he hadn’t found another pair. Feeling slightly uncomfortable at the prospect of sleeping in the nude against Lou he slid in on top the sheet and rolled over. This way she couldn’t kill him if he rolled over in the night and pulled her closer.

“Kid.” Lou groaned as she realized what he’d done, “Under the sheet. I promise I won’t kill you if you touch me.”

“It’s not the touching part that worries me.” Kid snapped, “Sleeping naked against you may just put my will power to the test and I can tell you right now it’s not nearly strong enough to resist you.”

“Kid.” Lou glanced at him in the dark. “ Don’t worry. I love you. Whatever happens, it’s between us.”

Sighing Kid slid under the cool sheets and lay down next to Lou. A moment later she’d rolled over to wrap herself around him. Smothering a groan he wrapped his arms around her and closed his eyes to sleep.

“Teaspoon you got a letter.” Buck called as he hurried up the steps to the Marshall’s office a day later.

“Who from?” Teaspoon said dreading the thought that it was from a Marshall saying Lou had killed the Kid or vice versa.

“L. Carson.” Buck replied quickly handing the paper over.

Tearing into the envelope, Teaspoon pulled out the letter and opened it. He instantly recognized the handwriting as Lou’s and settled into his chair to read the few lines she’d written.

Dear Father,

We are near Saint Jo and would love for you to come visit. Our current foreman, an older black man will meet you at the old barn near Rusty Falls in two days from when you get this letter. Please bring the boys, as we have work for them. Both of the children are fine, there are some unpleasant critters about but I’m sure we can handle them.

With all my love,
Your daughter Louise.

Frowning Teaspoon read through the letter again and glanced at Buck, “Where’d this come from?”

“Rider from the run from Saint Jo brought it. Said to give it to you as soon as possible. Seemed like he was in a hurry. Apparently a young Mexican boy gave it to him with the message that it was urgent.” Buck replied, “Why is something wrong?”

“Yeah.” Teaspoon rose and handed the letter to the young rider, “Read it yourself.”

Buck read it and started to laugh, “Well at least she hasn’t killed him yet.”

“Buck.” Teaspoon grabbed his coat, “Now is not the time for jokes.”

“Sorry Teaspoon.” Buck said as he followed Teaspoon back to the station.

“Everyone out?”

“They’re out fixing the fence on the north pen. Will be back shortly.” Buck replied as Rachel went to ring the dinner bell.

“Good. We leave tomorrow morning.”

Buck shrugged, whatever was going on Lou and Kid needed help and that was enough of a reason for him to ride out.

Cody rinsed off before diving past Jimmy headed for the dinner table. He sat down hurriedly and waited for Rachel to serve the evening meal. Once everyone was seated she set the dishes on the table and looked at Cody with a warning glare, “Just a minute. Teaspoon’s got something he wants to say.”

“Well where is he? I’m starving.” Cody complained.

“Right here Cody. Quit worrying about your belly and listen up.” Teaspoon tossed his coat onto the nearest bunk and sat down at the table quickly followed by Buck who handed him the letter he’d received.

“You boys better get some rest tonight. No late night card game. Got word from Lou today that she needs help.” Teaspoon started.

“What did the Kid do this time?” Jimmy asked softly.

“Nothing. Far as I can tell someone burnt that orphanage down to get a message across. I’m not sure what they were after but they didn’t get it, and Lou figures they’ll come after them next.”

“Well why the heck don’t they get themselves home?” Cody demanded.

“Because they can’t. If they get seen it could give away the position. A guide is going to meet us at Rusty Falls day after tomorrow. He’ll take us to them.”

“You think we can trust him?”

“Lou does. Unless you want to tell her she’s mistaken, I’m gonna trust her judgment.”

“This doesn’t sound good Teaspoon if Lou is asking for help It’s not like her.” Jimmy glanced at Rachel, “She say if the Kid was hurt? That’s about the only time she’d ask for help is if he’d been hurt.”

“No. This is something bigger.” Teaspoon shrugged, “Here you read the letter yourself.” He tossed the paper onto the table and Jimmy picked it up.

“Read it out loud. Save everyone from having to read it.” Rachel instructed.

“Dear Father, We are near Saint Jo and would love for you to come visit. Our current foreman, an older black man will meet you at the old barn near Rusty Falls in two days from the date of this letter. Please bring the boys, as we have work for them. Both of the children are fine, there are some unpleasant critters about but I’m sure we can handle them. With all my love, Your daughter Louise.” Jimmy glanced at Teaspoon, “She doesn’t have any kids, well other than Kid.”

“You want to tell me what that letter means if not a plea for help then?” Teaspoon demanded.

“When’re we leaving?” Cody asked his stomach forgotten as he thought of his friends.

“First light. I figure we may make good time, and if we’re early then the man she’s sending us may also be. The sooner we get there the better. “ Teaspoon replied turning his attention to his dinner.

“I hope you’re right Teaspoon.” Rachel whispered, “I hope you’re right.”

Kid watched Jeremiah and Theresa laughing in the swimming hole. Lou and he’d been there three days and Teaspoon and the boys were due tomorrow. With any luck the old ranger could think of some way of getting these children out of harms way.

Glancing up as a shadow fell across him he smiled at Lou, this had been good for them. They’d finally worked out all the problems they’d had. He understood she needed to keep her independence to some degree, didn’t mean she didn’t love him, and he’d managed to convince her that all his worrying was just caused he loved her and not because he wanted to control her. Lou still hadn’t said she’d marry him but he wasn’t going to push her. They’d take it one day at a time for now.

“Hey. How’s it going?” Lou asked leaning against him watching the two children playing.

“So far Theresa’s been winning.” Kid smiled and patted her hand where it lay on his thigh, “This has been good for them. They’re spending time with you and it’s helping to bring them out of that shell they’ve been living in.”

“You think so?” Lou said snuggling against him. She’d volunteered to take the watch last night so she was bone tired.

“Yeah I do.” Kid dropped a kiss on her forehead, “Why aren’t you sleeping?”

“I’ve gotten used to you sleeping with me. It’s kind of nice to be able to snuggle against you.” Lou replied through a yawn. “Figured I’d wait until you went to bed.”

Kid laughed softly, “Hey Theresa, Jeremiah. Come on, you’re gonna be late for your lessons.” He called.

“Oh Kid!” Jeremiah protested, “I hate those lessons. Who cares if I can to figures?”

“I do. Now you two better hurry and get dried off. No telling when one of those cute girls from your class might be around the corner.” He teased a blushing Jeremiah who scampered from the water and grabbed a towel. Throwing a disgusted look at his sister he headed for the house.

Rising Kid helped Lou up and they followed the two youngsters back to the house.

“Goodness Louise, you’re dead on your feet. You’d better get some rest.” Maurice said as Kid followed Lou through the doors.

“Just what I’d been telling her Maurice. I’m gonna tuck her in, might have a nap myself. If you need us just knock.” Kid said as they headed upstairs.

Rebekah noted the dust rising from the trail that Kid and Lou had come in on. Not sure if it was Lou’s friends or not she sent Rita to tell the sisters to take the children to the basement. Glancing around she noted that the yard had suddenly become empty and she stood waiting for the company to show up.

Teaspoon pulled up at the rise and glanced around, there wasn’t anything moving except a lone woman sitting on a swing atop the porch. Nudging his horse forward he led the way into the yard.

“Good morning.” Teaspoon spoke to the woman and waited for an invitation to get down.

Buck glanced around and noted Katy standing in the corral, “Teaspoon. Look there’s Katy. Kid and Lou’ve got to be here.”

“Perhaps.” Rebekah rose and walked to the railing. “You’re early.”

“Yeah.” Teaspoon acknowledged, “Lou sounded upset. Figured it best to get here sooner.”

“Well get down and come in. They’re upstairs resting at the moment. They took the watch last night.” Rebekah stated and led the men inside as several boys appeared and led the horses toward the barn.

Sitting down at the breakfast table Rebekah glanced at the old man who’d come at Lou’s request and tilted her head. “So you have any ideas?”

“Sure. But what exactly are we up against?” Teaspoon inquired quietly sipping a cup of coffee as a maid moved around dishing up breakfast.

“Charlten has a bill of sale for the children.” Rebekah stated quickly, “I have adoption papers that mean he legally can’t take them. They were adopted before the date Boggs set out for possession. Unfortunately, Charlten isn’t known for understanding he will try to take them.”

“Why don’t you send them to their adopted parents?” Cody asked munching on some toast.

“Their adopted father is here.” Rebekah stated, she didn’t think they knew anymore than the Kid had about what he’d been signing. “He can’t take them anywhere because Charlten is watching for them.”

“Where is he?” Teaspoon asked, “I think he needs to be in on this conversation don’t you?”

“He’s sleeping at the moment.” Rebekah replied, “They had the watch last night and I have no intention of waking either of them up before their ready. He agrees with Lou that you would probably know something about this. At least more than he does.”

“I still want to meet him.” Teaspoon snapped.

Rebekah looked at him with a slight frown and wondered just how much she could tell. Shaking her head she nodded at Maurice, “Maurice could you please get our guests?”

“Certain ma’am. They haven’t been sleeping long though.” Maurice said disgusted. “I know. But I think there are some questions that have to be answered and I’m not going to do it for ‘em.”

“Yes ma’am.” Turning the portly woman hurried from the room and up the stairs.

Groaning at the knock on the door Kid sat up the satin sheet pooling in his lap, “Yes?”

“Miss Harrison said for you and Louise to come downstairs. Your friends are here.” Maurice’s voice drifted through the door.

“We’ll be down in five minutes.” Kid shook Lou gently, “Hey. Teaspoon and the boys are here.”

“I thought they weren’t due until tomorrow.” Groaning Lou sat up and reached for her clothes. “I’m going to sleep in the barn. Probably get more sleep.”

“Come on. We’ll come back up later. Right now we’ve got to deal with the boys.” Kid said as Lou fumbled with the buttons on her blouse. Reaching past her fingers he quickly buttoned the top, dropped a quick kiss on her lips and handed her the black pants she’d found that fit her.

“Thanks.” Lou yawned and stood as Kid slid his pants on and buttoned them quickly. Grabbing her gun she led the way out of the room, unmindful of the fact that she was barefoot.

“You gonna put boots on?” Kid chuckled, as she looked at her bare feet then him.

“No. I intend to come back to bed.” Lou replied crossly, “You’ve gonna get some sleep to, so they’d better talk fast.”

“Yes boss.” Kid followed her down the stairs and into the dining room.

Teaspoon glanced up at the movement in the hall and noted Kid and Lou come in looking like they’d tumbled out of bed. Neither one had their shirt tucked in nor did Lou have any boots on.

“Morning.” Buck acknowledged them.

“Good morning Buck.” Kid said sitting down next to Jimmy, Lou settled on his other side.

“Miss Harrison?” Teaspoon turned back to their hostess a slight frown marring his face.

“Mr. Hunter here was just wondering if you’ve any ideas about the children?” Rebekah looked at Lou and Kid.

“No. If I did I’d have gotten them out of here.” Kid muttered reaching for the coffee pot.

“Me first.” Lou muttered holding her coffee cup out, “I need lots of coffee for this.”

“You have any ideas Teaspoon?” Kid asked pouring a cup of coffee for Lou and another for him. He glanced at the man he admired the most and waited.

“Aren’t we leaving someone out of this discussion?” Jimmy butted in.

“Who?” Lou asked from her coffee.

“The adopted father of the children.” Jimmy replied.

Kid shook his head, “No.”

“Kid.” Everyone’s inability to get the poor man was frustrating Teaspoon.

“What?” Lou looked at Teaspoon then back at Kid, “Oh just tell him.”

“Tell me what?” Teaspoon looked between the two and back at Rebekah Harrison.

Kid shrugged, “I’m sitting here aren’t I?” Kid glanced between Teaspoon and Rebekah. “What? I was trying to sleep.”

“Miss Harrison?” Teaspoon looked at Rebekah intent on getting to the bottom of this as Kid went from pale to red and back again as he hid behind his coffee.

Shaking her head Rebekah smiled, “I’ll leave you seven to discuss this. I have some paperwork to do.”

“What the Kid is saying Teaspoon is he adopted them.” Lou answered as their hostess walked out of the room.

Next to Kid Jimmy choked on his coffee, “You did what?” he gasped as Kid pounded him on the back.

“I adopted them.” Kid replied pounding his friend a little harder.

“Kid this is serious.” Teaspoon stated, “For that matter Lou how could he adopt them? Didn’t he need a signature or something from a family member?”

“I signed papers before he did.” Lou shrugged guiltily, “It wasn’t one of my brighter moves, but I’d say it worked out.”

“You two find trouble like most people find their shirt.” Cody laughed as Kid squirmed under Teaspoon’s gaze.

“I don’t consider Theresa and Jeremiah trouble Cody, they happen to be great kids.” Kid snapped setting his coffee down with a thump.

“Ain’t saying they aren’t.” Cody laughed at Kid’s irate expression.

“Enough Cody.” Teaspoon snapped, “Fine we’ll work around this. We need to find a way to get the children to safety.”

“Miss Harrison said that Charlten fellow would come to us. Something I was thinking we could use to our advantage.” Kid said as Lou rested her chin in her hand and closed her eyes. Shifting he poked her, “Don’t fall asleep there. Go back to bed.”

“Mmhm.” Lou muttered. “I’m part of this discussion.”

“Not if you’re asleep there darlin’.” Kid stated.

Glaring at him Lou rose and shuffled over to the settee. Sinking onto it she curled up and closed her eyes.

“Late night?”

“We took watch last night. Haven’t gone to bed yet.” Kid explained as Lou’s breathing evened out.

“So how is it you adopted those two young ‘uns?” Teaspoon asked, “You never said anything about it.”

“I’m not sure myself. I signed some papers when I was in Saint Jo a couple months back and took the kids out for a picnic. I do it all the time,” Kid shrugged, “Most of the time I stop in for a few hours drop off some things for them or to give the sisters some money before I head back to Rock Creek. They said they had to sign the kids out for the day if I was going to take them out. Having never taken them away from the orphanage before I just thought it was a normal thing and signed.” Kid replied as he dished up some of Hattie’s scrambled eggs.

“Didn’t you read what you were signing?” Teaspoon asked and noted the uncomfortable flush on the Kid’s face.

“I can read enough to get by on, but not that well. I didn’t think to question them.” Kid replied.

“Lou must have been pissed when she found out.” Buck pointed out, “I’m surprised you’re still walking.”

“We talked it over.” Kid replied glancing at Lou who had shifted in her sleep, “She’s okay with it.”

“Fine. We still have to figure out how to get this settled.” Teaspoon said leaning back. There would be time for explanations later.

“Well if he’s going to come to us, why not set him up?” Kid frowned as a thought occurred to him, “That way we have the jump on them.”

“It might work, but how are we going to get word out?” Jimmy asked.

“I’m not sure. I’ll have to think of something.” Teaspoon addressed Jimmy as Rebekah walked back into the room.

“Louise why aren’t you in bed?” Rebekah asked glancing at Kid with a frown, “Kid put her to bed before she falls on her face.”

Shaking his head Kid looked at Lou who shook her head, “She doesn’t want to go back to bed.”

“It wasn’t a suggestion.” Rebekah stated. “I’ll have someone wake you in time for tea.”

“Fine. That gives me a few hours of sleep.” Lou muttered as Kid pushed his chair back. “Goodnight.” Lou muttered preceding Kid from the room.

Teaspoon watched them fall into step with each other quietly discussing something only the two of them could understand. Shaking his head he turned back to the woman standing waiting for someone to say something.

“So how do you fit into this picture?” Noah asked suddenly. He wanted to know more about this woman.

“I live here.”

“I figured that. Doesn’t explain why we’re talking about helping children that were reported to be dead.”

“Jeremiah and Theresa are in studies at the moment. Being familiar with Charlten’s tactics I moved them as soon as it got dark.”

“How do you know him?” Teaspoon asked.

“He rode with my husband. Neither man was very conscientious about their responsibilities. The movement means everything.” Rebekah said sarcasm dripping from her tone as the table was cleared and several women entered to strip the draperies down.

“Where is your husband?”

“Dead. He was killed over a year ago.” Rebekah replied, “Kid might be able to tell you more about it.”

“What do you mean?” Jimmy asked a sick feeling in his stomach.

“Kid’s brother was my husband.” Rebekah replied rising from the table. “If you’ll excuse me. I have work to do.” Leaving the room quickly she didn’t notice the paler on Jimmy’s face or the looks exchanged between the five men.

“I think Kid’s got some explaining to do.” Cody said quietly, “This is mighty strange.”

“Kid never said anything about having a sister-in-law.” Buck replied, “I don’t think he’d lie about her.”

“Perhaps.” Jimmy replied hopefully, regardless he felt guilty for taking the woman’s husband.

“If you’ll follow me I’ll show you to your rooms.” A young Negro girl stood in the doorway watching them.

Rising quickly the men followed her up the stairs and down the hallway, she stopped next to a door and opened it to reveal a neatly made single bed, “This room and the other four on this side are yours.” She stated.

“Where’s the Kid staying?” Jimmy asked.

“Last door on the right. Down there.” Pointing the girl barely glanced at him before turning back toward the stairs. Within seconds she’d disappeared leaving the men to their own devices.

“I wonder where Lou is.” Buck murmured. “I can’t see her being too far off.”

“Probably sharing a room with Theresa and Jeremiah.” Teaspoon stated. Shrugging at the thought that maybe she and Kid were sharing a room he turned to the boys, “No sense in standing here. Best get some rest boys. From what was said I have a feeling that one of us will be on watch tonight. And that includes you Jimmy, whatever you need to talk to him about will have to wait.”

Stirring at the breeze blowing in the window Lou turned her head when she felt movement behind her and smiled. Kid lay on his stomach stretched out sound asleep, she hadn’t told him but she was kind of glad he’d adopted her brother and sister. Made things easy if something happened to her. She’d always been able to trust him even when he was driving her crazy with his worry; she’d still trusted him to be there. She knew he’d meant it when he said he didn’t regret taking responsibility for the children, it just proved how much he loved her, as well as the two youngsters.

Rolling over she traced a pattern on his bare shoulder and remembered that guilty look when he’d found out what he’d signed in a way that had endeared him even more. When he stirred she smiled softly and waited for him to open his eyes.

“What time is it?” Kid groaned, the light was fading in the room so it had to be at least late afternoon.

“Don’t know. I just woke up.” Lou said stretching out the kinks of her body. She noted the way Kid’s gaze followed her movements, a fire leaping to life in his blue eyes. Shaking his head Kid moved to get up only to stop at a hand on the shoulder.

“Stay with me.” Lou whispered softly.

Kid met Lou’s eyes and saw the answer in them. No matter what they’d always been friends, sometimes lovers but he wanted more than just a roll in the hay with her. Smiling he pulled her close and kissed her softly.

Sighing Lou wrapped her arms around him and closed her eyes. She always melted when he touched her and now was no exception. It had been so long since she’d been this close to him and she took advantage of it. With a soft moan she pushed at the sheet between them as he rolled with her, pulling her on top of him.

Smiling down at him she watched the man she loved as he traced the familiar lines of her body and closed her eyes. They’d work things out and make it.

“I love you Louise.” Kid whispered against her lips as she arched into his touch.

“I love you to Kid.” Lou moaned and sighed. The only sounds in the room moments later were the soft sighs and moans of the young lovers.

Rebekah noted her latest guests as they walked into the room; they looked rested but wary of the situation. Shaking her head sadly she only wished she could go back and change things. In a way she envied them their closeness, they’d withstood so much. Each man trusted the other with his life and his secrets, Jed and her had never been that close even when they’d first married.

At the thought of her short marriage she gritted her teeth, Jed had left her long before he’d been killed and she knew even if he had of stayed things would never have worked. There’d been too many differences and very little common ground. Unlike Lou and Kid, who loved each other, at the thought of the young couple she smiled, she’d figured out that they weren’t married when Lou had gotten a stricken look on her face and Kid had tried to hide that hopeful look he’d thrown at her.

“Evening.” Rebekah smiled, “I hope you’re rooms are adequate.”

“Very.” Teaspoon said as the boys sat down on the settee and in a couple of chairs. Settling in the overstuffed chair by the fireplace he studied the woman, “How come Kid’s never mentioned you?”

“He didn’t know about me.” Rebekah replied honestly, “Jed and I were married a very short time when he left. He was never around so I’m not surprised he forgot he had a wife waiting.”

“Considering what he was doing I’d think he’d want your support.” Jimmy said sullenly.

Rebekah laughed, “Running guns for the south! Don’t give me a heart attack. Had I known what he was doing when he was doing it I’d have turned him into the army. He knew I was against the southern ‘cause’ when we were courting. When I married him, I figured he felt the same way.”

“Miss Rebekah?” Turning they stared at the familiar faces of Lou’s siblings who were standing in the door looking at them with smiles.

“Come in. I imagine you want to say hi to everyone?” Rebekah smiled at the children. Maybe someday she’d have children of her own.

Laughing the children ran into the room and over to the boys talking at the same time, causing everyone to try and understand what they were saying.

“I take it Lou and Kid aren’t awake yet?” Teaspoon asked.

“Not that I know of. I suppose I should send someone up to wake them.” Rebekah stated quietly watching the children.

Rising Jimmy volunteered, “I’ll do it. Last door on the right?”

“Last door on the right.” Rebekah agreed as she rose to light the lanterns. The last rays of the sun were fading fast and while she relished the darkness, she knew they’d have to have light for supper.

Jimmy headed up the stairs quickly, turning he made his way to the door and knocked. When he didn’t get a response he knocked again and opened the door, seeing Lou’s hat on a chair he frowned and peeked around the door. Did he have the wrong room? Seeing two bodies in bed he flushed, nope. He had the right room.

Lou frowned as the door opened; someone pounding on the door had wakened her although Kid still slept. Pulling the sheet up under her arms she glared at the door and rolled her eyes when she saw who had pushed the door open.

“What is it Jimmy?” Lou asked softly causing him to blush and Kid to sit up awake.

“You coming downstairs?” Jimmy asked turning his back to them as Kid sat up. Yep, something was going on here and he wasn’t sure he wanted to know.

“Yeah.” Kid yawned, “We’ll be down in a couple of minutes.”

“Jimmy.” Lou’s low tone had the other man freezing, “What are you doing up here?”

“Came to get you. It’s getting late, figured you might be hungry.” Jimmy glanced at them and grinned, “Then again maybe not.”

“Get out!” Lou snapped blushing furiously. She smiled as Jimmy slammed the door laughing as he retreated. Flopping back on the bed, she glanced at Kid who was trying to hide a grin, “Come on I’m hungry.”

“Yeah.” Kid said smiling at her with a familiar look in his blue eyes before he swung his legs over the edge of the bed, when he was dressed he waited for Lou to finish brushing her hair out, before he followed her lead. With a shrug they headed downstairs to face everyone.

Supper was a noisy affair; everyone was trying to talk at once. Noting the easy interaction between Lou and Kid, Teaspoon wondered what had happened, they hadn’t snapped at each other at all. Glancing at Jimmy he noted the pair couldn’t quite meet his eyes and hid his smile behind his napkin.

“Miss Harrison, Moses is here.” Maurice said a moment later before a familiar figure stumbled into the room.

“Moses!” Rebekah moved quickly to catch the beaten man, “Maurice get some bandages.” She said as Kid and Jimmy caught the man under the arms and helped him to a chair

“Yes ma’am.” Shuffling off in a hurry the old woman went to get what she’d been asked to.

“Sorry Miss Harrison, don’t think I want to be bleeding on your fine furniture.” Moses muttered.

“Nonsense. You just rest; if I can’t get it out the furniture can be replace. What happened to you?”

“Charlten and his men stopped up at my cabin.” Moses gasped painfully, “Looking for the young ‘uns.”

“Lou take the children to Rita. Tell her to hide them.” Rebekah ordered quietly as Lou led her brother and sister from the room. A moment later she was back.

“He’s coming and he wants what’s his.” Moses cringed as Rebekah washed out the wounds.

“Damn. We aren’t ready for him.” Teaspoon muttered, “Pardon my language ma’am.”

“I’ve heard worse.” Rebekah stood and glanced

“That good for nothing polecat is sitting up on the rise waiting. I snuck in the back way.” The young boy who’d followed Moses explained.

“Do you think it would be a good idea to get the children out of the house completely?” Lou asked.

“They’re safe. Even if they burnt the house down the children couldn’t be found or touched. There’s a secret lower level that no one knows about except the builder and those who live here. The builder isn’t going to say anything.” Rebekah answered staring out the window.

“How can you be sure?” Cody asked, “If that guy’ll beat an old man, what’s to say.?”

“Charlten can’t touch a dead man.” Rebekah replied, “A friend of mine’s father built it for her when she was born. When she died she gave it to me.”

“We’ve got seven guns.” Rebekah looked at Lou and smiled, “Maybe eight. Lou come with me.”

“Where are we going?” Lou demanded as she was almost pulled from the room.

“You’ll see.” Rebekah led Lou to a door, unlocking it she stepped inside and Lou followed only to stop dead in her tracks. It looked like a munitions room.

“What is this place?”

“I keep this place stocked for emergencies. I don’t know if any of this stuff will help, I can’t shoot.” Rebekah said.

“We can use all of this.” Lou said fingering a cloth laying over something. Jerking the cloth away she laughed, it was a military gantline gun. Nodding she said, “We’re gonna need help to set it up, but definitely we can use this.”

Lifting one end of it Rebekah was surprised the young woman knew what kind of weaponry she had, then thought better of it. Something told her the young woman was a lot tougher than she appeared.

“A little help here.” Lou said as she backed into the room, “Look what we found.”

“Well that’s gonna be useful.” Teaspoon stared at the gun, “Where’d you get it?”

“Uncle Jeff!” Rebekah replied, “He dropped it off about a month ago. Hasn’t been back to pick it up.” Rebekah set it down then jumped just as a shot rang out shattering the window and everyone ducked down for cover.

“Harrison, I know you’ve got my property in there. Send ‘em out and we’ll be on our way.” The oily voice made Rebekah shudder with revulsion as Lou sat simmering.

“Go to hell Morgan.” Rebekah hollered back. “Their folks are here and you’re not taking nobody.”

“You’re lying. They ain’t got any folks. Boggs was killed and their momma died years ago.” The man hollered back.

They could tell he was coming closer, “Ain’t any Boggs children here I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Rebekah hedged.

“They go by McLoud!” Morgan Charlten snapped from the back of his horse. He was getting angry with that woman’s lip, she needed to be taught a lesson.

“Ain’t any McLoud children here either!” Rebekah retorted watching the riders getting into position. When Teaspoon motioned for her to continue she looked at him frustrated.

“I never was one for a lying woman. You best send those children out or I’ll come get them.”

“You’re trespassing Charlten. You can read, trespassers will be shot if caught. I caught you trespassing so you’re a dead man.”

“Why don’t you come say that to my face?”

Rolling her eyes Rebekah shook her head “Go away. There isn’t any McLoud children here or Boggs’s either.”

“Woman you’re trying my patience.”

“No more than you’re trying mine.” Rebekah snapped, “Stupid man.”

“I ain’t leaving without what’s mine.”

“Oh yes you are.” Lou muttered checking her gun; she wasn’t going to let anyone take her brother and sister away from her again.

“Easy.” Kid placed a hand on her arm and she looked at him. He had that worried look in his eyes, but understanding as well. Looking at him she knew he’d back her up no matter what the risk to him.

Nodding she hunkered next to him, “If we can get upstairs we could get the drop on him.” She whispered. She didn’t want anyone to know what they were doing.

“We’d need a rifle or two for that. These six guns aren’t going to work all that well for distance shooting.” Kid retorted.

“The store room.” Lou whispered. “Come on.” Keeping low she led Kid out of the room and into the hallway. They hurried down the hall to the still open door and Kid swore under his breath at the guns and ammo lining the walls.

“At least we’ve got a selection.” He muttered grabbing a rifle and munitions. “How we gonna get upstairs, they can see through the glass of the front door?”

“Not with out lights they can’t. Maurice hasn’t lit them yet, she’s hiding with the children.”

“Come on.”

Teaspoon noted the pair slip from the room and saw them head down the hallway before creeping up the stairs. “Cody, go with Kid and Lou. They’re headed upstairs.”

“Sure.” Cody quickly left the room, keeping low to avoid detection. He followed the pair up the stairs and into one of the bedrooms.

“At least we’ve got a clear shot.” Cody muttered as he settled next to Kid on the floor of Teaspoon’s bedroom.

“Yeah.” Lou noted a shadow moving away from the group and nudged Kid, “Look. They’re trying to get around us.”

“I can get him easily.” Cody replied lifting his rifle.

“Are you sure? I don’t want to give away our position without good reason.” Lou snapped as Kid glanced at Cody with a frown.

“Yeah I’m sure. He won’t get very far.” Cody said squeezing the trigger. They watched the man fall and smiled slightly, “Told ya.”

Shaking his head Kid glanced at Lou, “Now he’ll never shut up.”

“Hey I resent that.” Cody smiled at the Kid. He knew he was only teasing.

The report from his rifle hadn’t settled up the valley when the men on the hill and those in the house echoed it.

Sitting on the floor, Lou wondered what was happening outside. It was too dark to see, they were just as likely to shoot the fence as the gang on the hill. It would be a long night and she was tired, she just needed an hour of sleep then she’d be fine.

Kid leaned against the wall pondering the situation below and noted Lou leaning against him. He smiled when he realized she’d fallen asleep she was tired. Leaning his head back he dozed off only to jerk awake at the sound of an explosion.

An eerie light filled the room and he rose to look out the window, the barn was in flames.

“The barn.” He whispered thinking of the horses.

“The horses!” Rising Lou turned to head for the door just as a loud boom permeated the air and Kid stared as she jerked around and landed in a heap on the floor.

“Lou!” Scrambling to get to her he reach her a second before Cody did, peeling her shirt back slightly he checked for the wound and swore, he didn’t know a lot about the body but it didn’t look good.

“Try to stop the bleeding.” Cody said lifting his rifle, “I’ll see if I can get that sorry jackass.”

“Hold on Lou!” Kid pleaded as he grabbed for the sheet off Teaspoon’s bed. Tearing off some strips he stripped her shirt off and probed the wound, the bullet was lodged against her shoulder blade, turning her over he used his knife to slice through the skin and try to remove it. Once that was done he quickly wrapped the strips around her for modesty sake and padded up the wound. Applying pressure he sat there as Cody crawled over toward her.

“I’ll get Teaspoon.” Cody volunteered seeing the devastated look on Kid’s face.

Kid barely heard him as he shifted her to lie against him, “Hold on Lou. You’re gonna be okay.” He begged rocking her back and forth. He barely realized it when the bullets stopped flying, he only knew Lou was slowly bleeding to death and he couldn’t help her.

Cody never realized how dangerous it was to try to get downstairs in a hurry when there weren’t any lights until he slipped and nearly fell down the stairs. Diving into the study he tripped into Noah who was reloading.

“Damn Cody you’re supposed to be upstairs.” Noah snapped losing the grip he had on his gun, scattering bullets all over the floor.

“Sorry.” Cody mumbled, “Teaspoon you gotta come quick.”

“Cody I’m a little busy right now.” Teaspoon snapped as he ducked another shot. Suddenly the shooting from outside stopped and he raised up, the two men who were still standing were walking toward them with their hand behind their head.

“Who the hell?” Teaspoon muttered as he watched them coming.

“Friends of mine.” Rebekah replied, “Spotted Owl and Michael.”

“When did they get here?”

“Not long ago.” She replied rising she started lighting the lamps in the room.

“TEASPOON!” Cody nearly shouted.

“What?” Teaspoon glanced at Cody in the rising light and noted he looked sick at his stomach. “What happened?”

“It’s Lou.” Cody said they could hear Kid moving around upstairs and a door slamming against the wall as though it was kicked in. A moment later it was slammed shut, “That’s not good.” He whispered.

Teaspoon barely heard him as he ran for the stairs Rebekah hot on his heels.

Kid kicked their bedroom door shut and carried Lou to the bed, laying her on the bed he damned the men outside and lit a lantern. Once the room was lit he peeled the blood soaked bandages away and studied the wound.

Lou moaned and moved but Kid put his arms around her and held her as he sat on the bed stilling her, “Hold on love. It’s gonna be okay.” Kid prayed he wasn’t lying. He didn’t know what he’d do without her. Applying pressure to the still bleeding wound he waited for help keeping up a silently litany of prayer.

Teaspoon grimaced as he stepped into something sticky on the floor and glanced down, “Damn.” A trail of blood led down the hallway.

“This way.” Rebekah said as she lit a lamp and led the way down the hall. Knocking on a door she opened it slowly, a bloody boot print stood out near the handle and she smiled sadly.

“Kid?” Teaspoon said looking past Rebekah to where Kid sat rocking Lou both of them covered in blood and tears streaking his face.

“I’ll send for the doctor.” Rebekah stated and whirled from the room-leaving Teaspoon standing rooted to the spot.

Shaking himself out of the stupor he headed for the bed, “Kid? How bad is it?” He touched Kid’s shoulder and jerked back when he flinched.

“Bad.” Kid whispered still holding the wound. He could feel the blood soaking through the cloth and held on a little tighter. It didn’t matter if anyone was in the room; he barely realized Teaspoon was there.

“Kid let me look.” Teaspoon pushed Kid’s hands out of the way and lifted the makeshift bandage, swearing softy to himself he noted that as soon as the pressure had been removed, the bleeding has started again. Putting the bandage back he noticed Kid’s hands automatically went back to covering the wound.

“Kid you need to let her go.” Teaspoon said as Kid shook his head, “Yes. I’ll stay with her you go get cleaned up.

“No!” Kid snapped, “I’m not leaving her.”

Teaspoon shook his head, the wound looked close to the heart; he didn’t think Lou could survive long, “Kid the doctor’s coming. But he may not get here in time son, you have to let go.”

Kid glared at Teaspoon, “I am not letting her go!” Kid repeated firmly, “She’s gonna be fine. I won’t let her die.”

“Kid.” Teaspoon started.

“No. She’s gonna be fine.” Kid protested unmindful of the tears that streamed down his cheeks. Brushing a kiss on her forehead he rocked her and tried to stop the bleeding.

Glancing at the doorway Teaspoon saw Buck standing there and shook his head. Walking toward the door he glanced back at Kid as Buck stood waiting, “It’s not good. The bleeding isn’t stopping.” He whispered as Kid sat whispering to Lou.

“We need to get him out of here.” Buck whispered back.

“He won’t leave her.” Teaspoon said, “I tried, only thing we can do is knock him out and remove him that way. It isn’t make to much difference though, soon as he comes to he’ll be back in here as soon as he can get through the door.”

“I’ll try and talk to him.” Buck assured Teaspoon as he headed down the hall. Entering the room Buck closed the door and walked up to the bed, “Kid?”

“I’m not leaving her.” Kid whispered, “She needs me.”

“I know Kid. Let me have a look at the wound, maybe I can fix something to help with the bleeding.” Buck suggested as Kid stared at him. Seeing the look in his friend’s eyes he shook him to his soul.

Kid moved out of Buck’s way and paced the floor behind him as Buck checked the wound, when Buck glanced at him he knew Buck didn’t think it was good.

“It’s not a great place to get shot Kid.”

Shaking his head he glared at the half-breed, “Can you help?”

Buck knew he couldn’t but telling Kid might get him killed, “I might have something in my medicine pouch. It’s in my room though.” Buck said leaning on the wound, it gave him the illusion that he was helping if nothing else.

“Where? I’ll get.” Kid demanded running for the door.

“On the dresser.” Buck said. When Kid had gone he shook his head, “Come on Lou. I just hope you pull through otherwise it may kill him.” Buck said as he took in Lou’s paler and the shaky way she was breathing. They’d be lucky if she made it through the night.

“Here.” Kid stuffed the medicine pouch in Buck’s hands unmindful of the blood he still had on his hands, or the stains it would leave in the soft leather. He watched as Buck pulled out some dried herbs and made a poultice with the water in the pitcher next to the bed, when he placed it on the wound Kid pushed him out of the way and took over holding it in place.

“I’m not guaranteeing anything Kid.” Buck stated, “I don’t know if it’ll help.” Sighing softly he sat down in a chair and watched Kid rocking with her as he whispered to her.

Cody blanched at the blood on Teaspoon’s hands and turned away as the other boys came forward, “Teaspoon?” Jimmy asked.

“I don’t think so.” Teaspoon replied, “It’s a chest wound. Nasty one at that, the bleeding isn’t stopping.”

“The doctor’ll be here soon.” Maruice said.

“He may get here too late.” Teaspoon replied washing his hands and drying them with the towel he was handed.

“Hows the Kid?” Jimmy asked, he knew Kid would be upset.

Teaspoon glanced at Jimmy, despite their differences the pair were closer than brothers, “Devastated doesn’t begin to cover it. If she doesn’t pull through our prisoners may not make it to trial.”

“Kid wouldn’t do that.” Noah stated firmly, “He’s not like that. We all know he takes it hard when he has to kill someone.”

“Sure. But he’s not thinking clearly right now. His mind shut down all he’s seeing or thinking about is Lou.” Teaspoon said, “I don’t want to have to arrest him for murder.”

“The doctor’s coming.” Rebekah said rushing into the room.

“I hope he gets here soon.” Teaspoon glanced at her as the front door clicked shut.

“Miss Harrison?” An elderly man dressed like a preacher walked in, “You sent for me.”

“Yes I did. Come with me.” Turning Rebekah led the way up the stairs. “We had a bit of trouble this evening. One of the riders was hurt.”

“How bad is he?”

“She isn’t in good shape. There’s a lot of blood.” Rebekah said, “Watch your step Kid moved her and I’m afraid she bled all over the place.”

The doctor followed the woman into the bedroom and noted the half-breed sitting watching the young man on the bed holding a young woman close. Smiling at Rebekah he turned to the young man sitting in a chair, “Please take your friend out of here. I’m going to need some space.” He ordered.

Buck rose and walked over to Kid, “Come on Kid you have to move. The doctor’s here.” Buck said as Kid struggled to get out of his grasp. Leading Kid into the hallway he closed the door as Kid slid down the wall and crumpled onto the floor his hands buried in his hair.

“Kid listen to me. You have to come with me.” Buck said trying to get him to get up.

“No. I’m not moving. He might need help, or she might need me.” Kid replied jerking a way from him. When Buck touched him again he pulled away like he was burnt, “Just go away Buck! I don’t need you!”

Buck stepped back at Kid’s outburst, Cody’s right this wasn’t good. Shaking his head he headed downstairs. His friends were standing around at the foot of the steps and glanced up at him as he walked down, he’d wiped the blood off his hands but he could still see it and smell it.

“Well?” Jimmy asked. “Where’s the Kid?”

“He won’t move out of the hallway. I tried he just told me to get lost.” Buck replied. “I’m lucky to have gotten him out of the doctor’s way.”

Shaking his head Jimmy took a step forward, “Leave him be.” Buck laid a hand on his arm, “If you go up there he may retreat even further. Let him come to us.”

Jimmy searched his friend’s eyes and saw the truth; Kid would come down in his own time. Until then they could only wait.

It seemed like hours before the door opened and Kid rose to his feet unsteadily as Rebekah walked out, “Lou?”

“The doctor’s just finishing up. You can go in.” Rebekah noted the boy hadn’t changed his bloody clothes and sighed, “Kid might I make a suggestion?”

“What?” Kid said quickly heading for the door.

“Take a bath, change your clothes. If she pulls through and wakes up you’ll scare her to death. You’re covered in blood.” Rebekah pointed out as Kid looked at himself in surprise.

“I guess you’re right.” Kid said. “I’ll see her first then I’ll take a bath.”

Rebekah nodded and headed downstairs; she knew Kid would stay with Lou. It didn’t matter that the young woman was slowly dying, Kid wouldn’t move until he was ready.

“Miss Harrison?” Jimmy asked as she entered the room.

“Yes?”

“How is?”

“Lou’s hanging on by a thread, and Kid’s well he’s hanging on.” Rebekah stated quietly.

“Can we see her?” Noah asked quietly.

“Wait until Kid leaves the room. I talked him into a bath.” Rebekah stated, “While he’s in the bath you can visit her, for a moment only.”

Half an hour later Kid sat soaking in a tub in Jimmy’s room, his clothes had been taken so he was stuck here until fresh clothes were brought. He quickly scrubbed up, the bath water running red with Lou’s blood. ‘Please let her be alright.’ he prayed, ‘she’s just got to be.’

Leaning his head back he closed his eyes for just a second he should be with her, she needed him instead of sitting in a tub. But Rebekah was right; going to her soaked in her blood wouldn’t help her at all.

Jimmy stared at the pale woman who laid before him, the sheets she’d been laying on were piled near the laundry chute, her clothes in the heap, the door opened and Rebekah walked in with Kid’s clothes and Jimmy stared at the items. Kid’s pants and shirt were red with the blood in them; he could hardly recognize them as clothes.

“You’d best hurry. Kid’s gonna be done and wanting to come back here in a couple minutes.”

“Come on boys, best let Kid get in all the time he can.” Teaspoon said ushering the boys out of the room as Rebekah took fresh clothes down the hall.

She knocked and glanced up as Jimmy took the clothes and smiled, “I need to talk to him.”

Rebekah nodded and departed as Jimmy walked into the room closing the door behind him.

Seeing Jimmy Kid reach for a towel and quickly dried off before reaching for his clothes.

“How are you doing Kid?” Jimmy asked concerned for the paler and hopeless look in Kid’s eyes.

“How’s Lou?” Kid replied not really paying attention to what Jimmy had asked him.

“Kid.” Jimmy stepped in front of Kid and made him meet his eyes, “Talk to me.”

“I’ve got to get back to Lou.” Kid replied trying to step around Jimmy.

“No. You have to talk to me.” Jimmy insisted, he didn’t know why but for some reason he knew Kid needed to admit that Lou was dying.

“I have to get to Lou, Jimmy so move.” Kid snapped angrily. He didn’t understand why his friend wouldn’t move out of his way, didn’t he understand Lou could leave him at any time. Kid pushed that thought away he wouldn’t let her die. He wouldn’t lose her no matter what he had to do.

“Kid it isn’t going to matter how long you are.” Jimmy insisted seeing the brief flash of recognition in Kid’s eyes before he’d pushed it aside.

“Yes it is.” Kid insisted and grabbed Jimmy as he stood in front of the door. Shoving at him Kid tried to get him to move, “Now get out of my way.”

“No!” Jimmy snapped ducking as Kid took a swing at him, punching the other man back he watched Kid hit the floor and shook his head, “Kid I’m sorry!”

“No you’re not.” Kid replied picking himself up, “But I ain’t go time for this right now or I’d take you’re head off.”

“Kid!” Jimmy snapped, “Why can’t you just admit what everyone knows? Lou’s hurt bad.”

“You think I don’t know that?” Kid demanded, “I’m aware of how bad Lou is hurt, she doesn’t need to be alone.”

“She doesn’t or you don’t.” Jimmy demanded.

Shaking his head Kid brushed past Jimmy and opened the door, “I’ve always been alone, and without her I’m alone. What do you care? You like being alone having other’s looking in to your life but never a part of it!” Kid slammed the door on Jimmy’s face and hurried down the hall.

Rebekah heard the argument and noted Kid’s storming down the hall. She walked upstairs as Jimmy left his room and turned to Kid’s room knocking on the door she wasn’t surprised to hear a firm go away. She was however shocked to hear the lock clicking into place and a chair being moved under the door handle.

Over the next few days a habit was set of Rebekah taking food upstairs and leaving it in the hall the she would go back later and retrieve the empty tray. “What do you think?” Teaspoon asked her one afternoon as she readied a tray for the pair upstairs.

“The doctor said it could be a good sign. What about Jimmy?”

“Still walking around feeling guilty cause he started a fight with Kid. He was trying to help and unfortunately it came out wrong.” Teaspoon replied.

“Funny isn’t that the way of young people these days.” Rebekah lifted the tray and turned. She raised an eyebrow when Teaspoon took it but didn’t comment as he headed upstairs.

“Kid?” Teaspoon knocked on the door, “Kid open the door. I need to talk to you.”

Kid sat in his chair and watched Lou sleeping, she’d opened her eyes earlier and smiled at him. He listened to Teaspoon knocking and rose he didn’t want anyone to wake her up. Opening the door he stared at his friend and mentor.

Teaspoon stared. Kid was disheveled and rumpled like he’d been sleeping in his clothes, he hadn’t shave in a day or so by the look of it and yet there was a smile in his eyes if not his face.

“What?”

“How’s Lou?” Teaspoon asked glancing at the woman still lying prone in bed.

“Getting better.” Kids replied quickly and reach for the tray. He carried it to the table next to the bed and sat down. Brushing Lou’s hair out of her face he started the slow process of getting her to eat some of the broth. He rarely felt like eating but concern for Lou prompted him to do it. She’d be mad if she got up and he was sick cause he wasn’t eating.

Teaspoon walked into the room amazed that Kid would try to feed a comatose woman but stopped when Lou turned her head and mumbled something.

“Come on. You’ve got to eat something.” Kid encouraged, he knew she hated the plain broth but it was the only thing she wouldn’t have to chew. Taking care he slowly fed her the whole bowl and then wiped her mouth with the napkin and tucked her back in. “There you get some more rest.”

“How are you holding up?” Teaspoon asked, he’d sat down in the chair Kid had been sitting in and watched them.

“I’m fine.” Kid replied, “Lou’s the one doing all the work.”

“Jimmy feels bad about what happened.” Teaspoon mentioned watching Kid’s shoulders tense.

“I shouldn’t have said that to him.” Kid muttered. “He just wouldn’t get out of my way.”

“I know that son, you should talk to him. I’ll set with Lou if you want to go now. She’s gonna be madder than a wet hen if you and Jimmy are fighting when she wakes up.”

Kid had been about to protest but the mention of how Lou would feel had him agreeing. Quickly he shaved and brushed his hair before he started from the room, “Where is he?”

“Barn. Working with the boys to repair the burnt section.” Teaspoon said leaning back and watching the door close with a soft click.

Noah glanced up and froze, walking toward them Kid looked exhausted. Slapping Cody on the shoulder he indicated what he’d seen and noted Cody drop the burnt log, barely missing his foot and catching Buck in the shin.

“Cody! Watch it would you?” Buck snapped glancing up. He grinned, “Hey Jimmy looks who’s coming.”

Jimmy glanced up and noted Kid coming toward them. He felt a sinking sensation in his stomach, no matter what he knew Kid loved him, sometimes though that boy was hard headed. “Afternoon Kid.”

“Jimmy. You got a minute?” When the other boys had drifted a distance away he turned back to his friend. “I’m sorry.” Kid muttered. “I shouldn’t have hit you and I shouldn’t have said what I said.”

“Naw, I’d say you did what you’re heart told you. If I’d been in your position, you never know I might have done the same thing.” Jimmy shrugged, “Besides you were right. I don’t let many people in. The fewer people you let get close to you the less likely you are to get hurt.”

“I never for a minute believed that about you Jimmy. I was just hurting.” Kid kicked at a burnt log and glanced at his friend. He smiled at Jimmy’s sheepish look and realized he’d been forgiven.

“It’s alright.” Jimmy slapped him on the shoulder, “So you out here stretching your legs or do you want to do some honest work for a change?” Jimmy teased him, knowing he’d probably go back to sit with Lou.

“I should go sit with Lou.” Kid said hesitantly, “She opened her eyes today. Don’t want her to think I’ve abandoned my post.”

“She did?” Jimmy laughed, “That’s great, you’d better get back then.”

Kid just smiled and headed back to the house as the others went back to talk to Jimmy.

“Hey Jimmy what’s Kid so happy about?” Cody said.

“Lou opened her eyes.” Jimmy replied glancing at them, “Come on lets get this cleared away.”

“Shouldn’t we go inside? If she’s opening her eyes we should be there.” Cody protested.

“No. We shouldn’t.” Jimmy replied, “Don’t go poking your nose in Cody. Lou’s likely to shoot it off.”

Laughing the boys returned to work.

Lou struggled to open her eyes she knew something was wrong, she could tell. When she opened her eyes she didn’t see Kid, instead Teaspoon was sitting in the chair his hat pulled down over his eyes looking like he was resting.

“Kid?” She croaked. Her throat was dry and scratchy and she desperately wanted a drink of water. She reach out for the glass sitting there and winced at the pain in her chest.

Teaspoon sat upright at the low sound coming from the bed, he was sure he’d heard Lou asking for the Kid. Rising quickly he noted she was reaching for the glass of water sitting next to the bed and hurried to grab it for her.

“Easy does it girl.” Teaspoon soothed handing her the glass and holding it steady as she drank.

“Kid?” Lou whispered looking around.

“He’s talking to Jimmy.” Teaspoon explained, “I’ll go get him.”

“He’ll be back.” Lou replied and closed her eyes. Within seconds she was asleep and Teaspoon put the water back where he’d got it. He had no idea how long he sat there before Kid walked into the room and froze.

“What happened?” Kid demanded rushing to the bed.

“She needed a drink of water is all Kid. Don’t go fussing.” Teaspoon said tugging on the blankets to cover her up. “She’s just sleeping.”

“Thanks.” Kid sat back in his chair and gazed at a sleeping Lou

“No problem son.” Teaspoon slapped him on the shoulder and left, his face wreathed in smiles.

It was nearly two weeks before Lou was well enough to get out of bed and move around. When she got up Kid helped her, and she realized that he hadn’t left her side through the whole ordeal. Amazed that he’d been there through so much, Lou finally realized what the Kid had meant when he said he loved the woman she was, not the woman everyone thought he wanted her to be.

Sitting on the veranda one sunny afternoon Lou watched Kid working with Katy and sighed as she thought of all she’d put him through. “Funny how pride seemed so important, until someone else gives up theirs to be with you.”

“Isn’t it though.” Rebekah sat next to Lou and put the rocker in motion. “I guess I never realized that until Jed left the last time.”

“What do you mean?” Lou asked tearing her gaze away from Kid for a moment.

“Kid loves you. He loves you in the good and the bad, no matter what happens he’ll be there for you.” Rebekah shrugged a blush on her cheeks, “Jed married me for the money I had.”

“I’m sure you’re mistaken.”

“No. Jed would’ve left me bleeding to death if I’d been shot. We never really had what you’ve got. I think I married him to escape my own mind.” Rebekah smiled, “I wonder how it is that someone so cold could have a brother so warm and loving. He might fight with the boys but he loves them like brothers.”

“Yeah. We’re a family.” Lou smiled as Kid spotted her. Waving at him she laughed softly when he patted Katy and left her in the corral to head for the house. “We’re definitely family.”

Kid grinned at Lou who sat smiling Jeremiah and Theresa was with Buck and Cody at the swimming hole and Teaspoon, Jimmy and Noah were in town meeting with the judge. “Hey beautiful, how you feeling?”

“Sore but happy.” Lou replied as he walked up and set next to her, “How about you?”

“Tired but happy.” Kid replied. “What do you want to do about Jeremiah and Theresa?”

“What do you mean?” Lou asked frowning slightly.

“Well I was thinking since we’re going back to Rock Creek, why not take ‘em with us. I’m sure Rachel could keep an eye on them if we asked her to. And when we’re not on runs we could spend time with them.” Kid explained.

Lou shook her head, “Kid I think Rachel would kill you for even suggesting it.” Lou glanced at her hands and turned back to Kid, “Sides since I’m going to be off runs for a while, I could watch them.”

“What do you mean?” Kid asked, “Why would you be off runs for long? You’re just about healed ain’t you?”

“Kid, Teaspoon isn’t going to put me on a run until he’s sure I’m back to one hundred percent. I have trouble even walking to the barn much less ride a horse right now. Besides I’m surprised I’d have thought you’d be overjoyed to have me off runs.”

“It wasn’t the runs that bothered me it was putting yourself at risk. It’s your choice I ain’t gonna tell you what to do.” Kid said softly.

Lou studied him for a minute silently then turned as Rebekah cleared her throat.

“Why not leave them here? They’re safe, and comfortable. I don’t mind having them, and you can come visit any time. Besides you’re family, it’s the least I can do for you.” Rebekah offered.

“We’ll think on it.” Lou replied as Rebekah rose.

“You do that. I’m gonna see if Maurice has started lunch.”

“Well?” Kid asked, “It’s an option. I ain’t saying we should to it, just saying it’s out there if we want to take her up on it.”

Lou watched the wind move the tree branches and sighed, “I think she’s right. As much as I hate to admit it. Having them in Rock Creek is just putting them in unnecessary danger. Here they’d be safe and we could always come visit when ever we have a few days off.”

Kid smiled, “If that’s what you want. I’m gonna get back to work. That corral ain’t gonna fix itself.” Leaping off the porch he headed back for the corral.

Lou sighed and rose shakily to her feet. She’d insisted on wearing her pants and now she was glad as she made her way silently after the Kid. It was time to come clean. Even if he didn’t think so, she knew he was happy that she’d decided to step back from the runs for a while. Moving slowly she walked over to the corral and leaned against it where it was steady.

“You know Kid.” Lou smiled as he jumped.

“Gosh darn it Lou!” Kid snapped jumping out of his skin, “What are you doing up moving around like that? You’re supposed to be taking it easy you know?”

Smiling Lou tilted her head and studied him, “I heard the express is running out of money.”

“Yeah. I heard it to.” Kid replied frowning, “I hope not.”

“You still going home to Virginia?” She asked softly.

“Why? You going there?” Kid asked hesitantly.

“Not if you’re not.” Lou replied. “Just thinking, the money you saved and the money I’ve got put together would be a hefty amount. Might be able to even buy a small farm with it.”

“And what about Jeremiah and Theresa. Costs money to have children around you know.”

“I know. We could think of something. And you haven’t answered my question.” Lou looked at Kid seriously, waiting for an answer.

“No, I’m not going to Virginia, don’t see no point to going home to somewhere that isn’t home anymore. Now let me get some work done woman, you’re driving me to distraction.” Kid said kissing her quickly, “I love you.”

Lou laughed and headed back for the house only to stop as Kid walked up behind her, gasping at the sudden move, she curled into him when he swung her into his arms and headed for the house.

A week later, Lou climbed into the back of the buckboard and put her feet up as Kid tied Katy and Lightening behind. The boys had left a few days earlier and they’d stayed to spend time with Jeremiah and Theresa but it was time to go home. Watching Theresa smile as Kid said something to her Lou had to hide a grin, probably trying to sweet talk her sister into something.

“You gonna back soon?” Jeremiah asked.

“Soon as I can sit a horse.” Lou replied. “You can come visit whenever Rebekah says you can. You be good and look out for her.”

“I will Louise. Don’t let Kid bully you, it ain’t always up to him you know.”

“I know.” Louise smiled, “Sides he don’t bully. He just sweet-talks me into doing what he wants. But I’ll get even one of these days.” Lou laughed at her brother’s frown. “Don’t worry. We both love you, it’ll work out.”

“Gotta go Lou.” Kid said climbing into the buckboard. “Rachel’s gonna send the boys out if we’re late.”

“I’ll take care of them Louise, Kid.” Rebekah said with a smile as she pulled Theresa and Jeremiah away from the buckboard. “You have a safe trip home.”

“Have a good trip Louise.” Theresa smiled as the buckboard moved out.

Sighing Lou waved at her siblings and relaxed in the blankets Kid had laid out for her. The trip up the long drive was silent and Lou dozed off. When she woke the sun was high in the sky and the buckboard was parked beneath a stand of trees. Glancing around she saw Kid sitting on the seat looking at her with a grin.

“Morning again. You hungry?” Kid asked.

“Yeah. I could eat something. Not broth though.” Lou made a face at the memory of that tasteless soup Kid had poured down her throat.

“How about a sandwich?”

“Sure.” Wincing at the still tender wound Lou sat up and kicked off the blankets Kid had tossed over her as she slept. Taking the sandwich from him she watched him care for the horses before grabbing a sandwich himself. Settling on the wagon next to her he ate quietly seemingly lost in thought.

“What you think about?” Lou asked hating to bother him but not wanting to sit silently.

“What could have happened.” Kid replied. “I just about lost you to some fool’s bullet. I’m not sure I could have handled that.”

“Kid it’s okay. You can’t blame yourself for that man’s stupidity. If it wasn’t for you I’d be dead right about now.” Lou laid a hand on his arm. “We both know that life’s full of chances Kid, I could have lost you just as easily.” Lou paled at the thought.

“I know. It’s just that despite everything we’ve been through and all the pain I inflicted on you I guess it just seemed so stupid to loose you like that.” Kid shrugged. “I guess it doesn’t make too much sense.”

“Makes perfect sense. We can’t change the past Kid, we can only live the future.” Lou looked at him pleadingly, “Besides even if I wanted to you wouldn’t let me give up. You don’t know when to back down.”

Kid smiled at her words and shook his head, “You’re right. As usual.”

Lou smiled, “So can I sit up there with you for the rest of this trip. I stay back here I’m just going to sleep.”

“I suppose. You got any stories you can tell.”

“Sure. I’ve got one.” Lou laughed, “About a stubborn rider who refused to give up the woman he loved.”

“Does it have a happy ending?” Kid asked as he settled her next to him and put the wagon in motion.

“Depends.” Lou laughed at his affronted look.

“On what?”

“On you. You planning on asking me to marry you again or do I have to do the asking?” Lou replied laughing at Kid’s shocked look. Snuggling closer to him she leaned against his shoulder and sighed as he grumbled under his breath about impatience. She knew he’d ask her before they got home, he just planned on keeping her in suspense until then.

Noah brushed his buckskin down and waited. He’d told Rachel if they weren’t home by nightfall he’d go looking. Hearing Lou laughing he stepped out of the barn, with the other riders in town he was alone as Lou and Kid rode into the yard.

“Figured you two would be back long before now.” Noah said as Kid jumped down and turned to lift Lou down carefully.

“We had a little problem with one of the wheels.” Lou said flushing slightly, “Kid fixed it though.”

“Well as long as you made it.” Noah said just as Rachel came out of the house and headed for them, “Don’t say I didn’t warn you. She’s been going insane and driving us with her for the last three days.”

“Hi Rachel.” Lou smiled at the woman.

“Lou, come on you need to resting.” Rachel glared at Kid who looked insulted.

“I’m fine Rachel. I rest anymore and I’ll never get anything done.” Lou protested as she was led toward the big house, “Besides Rachel I’m staying in the bunkhouse.”

“Louise. Don’t argue. Obviously the trip was taxing on you. Noah should have gone to meet you.” Rachel said leading Lou up the steps and into the house.

“Well I hope she isn’t expecting me to help.” Kid muttered and turned his attention to the horses, “You want to give me a hand? Sooner we get these animals into the corral the sooner I can get away from Rachel and her questions.”

Noah laughed, “Sure. You going into town?”

“Yeah. Lou needs to lie down and I don’t want to go over it for Rachel. Been over everything twice now as it is.” Kid complained softly.

Within minutes they had the team unharnessed, Lightening unsaddled and bedded down for the night. Swinging up on Katy, Kid followed Noah into town.

“Hey Kid. Glad to see you’re back.” Jimmy said coming out of Thompkin’s mercantile.

“How was the trip?” Cody asked.

“Fine.” Kid replied stepping out of the way of a young woman carrying some parcels.

“Except for that wheel.” Noah put in. He grinned at Kid’s dirty look and shrugged, “What?”

“Never mind.” Kid snapped and moved past Jimmy and Cody into Thompkins. The man didn’t really care for express riders but they spent the most in his store so he tolerated them. Grabbing two new shirts he paid for them and quickly walked out.

“Something happen to your shirts on the way back?” Cody asked perturbed that Kid would purchase clothes.

“Just needed new ones.” Kid replied stowing them in his saddlebag. He’d picked up Lou’s ring to but they didn’t need to know that.

“What exactly happened with your wheel?” Noah asked.

“It broke.” Kid glared at the other man over the mare’s back.

“Come on you two. Might as well have a sarsaparilla while we’re here.” Cody said. “I don’t think Rachel has even started supper yet.”

Groaning Kid leaned against Katy and shook his head, “You know Teaspoon don’t want us in the saloon.”

“You okay Kid. You’re looking a might flushed.” Jimmy asked genuinely concerned.

“Yeah I’m fine. Just tired.” Kid replied stepping into the saddle. Turning his horse around he headed for the station.

“What was that all about?” Cody asked as they watched Kid ride back to the station.

Lou waited for Rachel to leave the room before quietly sneaking out the door; all of her questions were giving her a headache. Closing the door silently she headed for the bunkhouse as Kid rode in on Katy, changing directions she met him at the barn, “Hey. The boys get to you?”

“Yep.” Kid replied as he unsaddled Katy. “You’d think a man couldn’t buy a shirt anymore the way those three were going at it.”

Lou smiled, “Did you get it?”

“Yes Miss Nosey, I got it.” Kid laughed at Lou’s expectant look and reach in his saddlebag. He pulled the small box out and handed it to her, he’d already been down on the one knee routine on the way back so she just opened the box and gasped.

Lou threw her arms around his neck, “Thank you.”

“Don’t go giving the boys anything else to talk about.” Kid laughed. “I’m already gonna get the third degree. Seems they think its funny me buying some new shirts.”

Slipping the ring on her finger Kid noted the way she bit her lip, “Can’t I show them?”

“Sure.” Dropping a quick kiss on her lips he glanced up “Sounds like the boys are back. Let ‘em stew for a while.” Kid suggested as Lou laughed.

“So how many new shirts did you get? You only needed one for this replacement.” Lou muttered glancing down, so far no one had noticed she was wearing Kid’s shirt tucked into her pants.

“Two for me and one for you. Figured if you’re that into my clothes you’ll probably take them all over at some time. This way I can say it’s your shirt, not mine. I don’t have your figure you know.” Kid laughed at her blush. With a pat on Katy’s rump he headed for the barn door as Noah, Jimmy and Cody walked in. Smothering a groan he glanced at Lou and shook his head at her shrug.

“So Kid what else did you buy?” Jimmy asked, he knew something was up it was just a matter of figuring out what it was.

“I bought shirts.” Kid replied ushering Lou out of the barn before she could laugh herself to death. “I don’t think it’s funny Louise. Having my friends walk around asking about why I’m buying new clothes, figure they wanted me to run around in my long johns or something.” Kid declared as they headed for the bunkhouse just loud enough for the boys to hear.

Biting her lip to stop herself from laughing Lou hurried toward the bunkhouse; once the door was closed she sat down on Kid’s bunk and laughed until she cried. Kid chuckled as he realized the boys were on to them, although they didn’t know exactly what they had figured out.

“You weren’t kidding when you said they were asking you about your clothes.” Lou chortled.

“Yeah well Rachel must be pretty close to that.” Kid jerked his head toward the trio who had put their horses up and were headed for the bunkhouse.

“Rachel was just scary.” Lou laughed holding her sides, “I never seen anyone ask the same question so many ways before.”

Kid raised an eyebrow, “What question?”

“How was the trip?” Lou said brushing at the tears running down her face. “She must have asked me at least ten times.”

Sitting down Kid laughed along with her as the door opened and Cody peaked in.

Cody glanced at Jimmy and Noah, “They’re laughing.” He said and pushed the door open even further.

Kid glanced at them and laughed harder, his friends looked like they’d been told they couldn’t have desert or something. Lou just sat up opened her mouth and started to laugh again. “Jimmy close your mouth. You’re only going to catch flies like that.” She laughed flopping over on the bunk.

“We’re not laughing at you.” Kid chortled. “Honestly.”

“What is all the ruckus?” Teaspoon demanded pushing the door open and staring at his two riders laughing so hard.

Glancing at Teaspoon Kid tried to stop laughing but it didn’t work very well.

“Would someone tell me what is going on?” Teaspoon asked as Rachel rushed up behind him.

“Lou’s gone.” Rachel said to Teaspoon worriedly. “She should be resting.”

“Say that ten times.” Lou retorted sending Kid into another fit of laughter.

“Be careful of your side.” Rachel said as she moved toward Lou.

“How many ways can you say that?” Kid asked as Lou giggled, pulling a pillow over her face.

“What has gotten into you two?” Rachel demanded.

“Nothing.” Kid replied trying to keep a straight face, “Absolutely nothing.”

“Only nine more times to go Kid.” Lou held the pillow in her lap trying to keep from laughing at Rachel’s confused expression.

Rachel turned to the boys who were standing looking dumbfounded, “Boys?”

“Don’t know.” Noah shrugged, “But whatever it is I don’t want to catch it.”

“Louise!” Rachel noted the girl was holding her side, “Did you hurt yourself again?”

“No mother dearest.” Lou replied. “My sides hurt from laughing.”

“Well supper’s nearly ready don’t you think you should wash up?” Rachel asked.

Kid shrugged still grinning, “Already did that once today. In cold water to boot.”

“Hey!” Lou tossed the pillow at him, “It wasn’t that cold.”

“Try saying that with a wagon wheel on you.” Kid laughed as he walked out the door.

Shrugged Lou edged toward the floor, she knew everyone would expect answers, drat. Kid had done it on purpose. “What?”

“Come on Lou. What’s so funny?” Jimmy demanded.

“Nothing. We were laughing about his shirts.”

“Shirts?” Teaspoon asked.

“Yeah the boys were grilling him about him buying new shirts.” Lou said quickly, it made more sense than saying they were laughing at Rachel. Brushing her hair out of her eyes she smiled sweetly and inched her way to the door, “I’ll just go wash up.”

“Did you notice?” Jimmy asked Noah.

“Notice what?” Noah replied still puzzled over what had happened.

“What comes in little boxes?” Jimmy tossed the ring box to Noah and waited.

“He bought her a ring?” Cody asked.

“I’d say.” Jimmy replied, “There has to be a reason why he’d buy a stack of shirts.”

Teaspoon grinned and glanced out the window, the pair were engrossed in a conversation, “Only engagement I ever heard of resulting from a gun fight.”

“Now you hush! Just cause he bought her a ring doesn’t mean anything?” Rachel snapped, Lou would have told her. Wouldn’t she have?

“No?” Cody said crossing his arms. “I’d say it wasn’t a wagon wheel he had on him in the creek today.” Everyone moved to the window and watched as the young couple was standing in the barn kissing. “Wonder if I should go out there.”

“I wouldn’t. Lou’ll probably kill you.” Jimmy retorted as the faint drum of hoof beats reached them. Yep things were definitely getting interesting around here. Wonder what else they had in store for everyone. Knowing Kid and Lou it probably wouldn’t be something simple.

“Best get ready. It’s my run.” Noah said grabbing his gear, “I’ll tell them Cody wants to talk to them.”

“You do that.” Cody snapped, he respected Lou’s temper and Kid wasn’t easy to bluff.

Shaking his head Jimmy just turned away from the window as Buck rode in, it would be nice when things were back to normal he thought. What he wouldn’t give for a nice familiar gunfight, or Cody’s whining. He’d prefer anything normal as long as it didn’t interfere too much with everyone’s plans. Settling at the table he waited for Rachel to set the table for supper and smiled. Things were improving, he thought, yep things were definitely looking up. He tossed the small box on Kid’s bed where he knew they’d find it.
