(lyrics in italics are the song “The Rest Of Mine” by Trace Adkins/Kenny Beard. No infringement intended with the use of the lyrics as inspiration for this story…) The band of outlaws surrounded them and they knew it. There’s no guarantee that we’ll see tomorrow
Jimmy checked his Colts once again, making sure they were ready for when the shooting started. He looked over at Lou, as she pushed her glasses up on the bridge of her nose, as if that helped her concentrate on some task she was working on. Looking out from the rocks they were hunkered down behind, Jimmy noticed at least two more men than there had been last time he looked. ‘This isn’t good,’ he thought. “Damn, Lou. I don’t like these odds. When it was just the four of them chasing us, those odds I could work with, but now…there’s at least ten of ‘em!” Lou looked up at him and gave him a weak smile. “I know Jimmy, I know. We can’t give up though. Not now, not when we just found each other…” Jimmy leaned over and kissed her hard on the mouth, silently agreeing with her. Not that he had planned on giving up. It was just that, now that he and Lou had agreed to see each other in a romantic way, well he just didn’t want anything to get in their way. So there’s no way I’ll ever for one second let you wonder
“Lou,” he called out, getting her attention focused on him and not the shouts of the men surrounding them. He scooted closer to her, lifting his hand to gently wipe a smudge on her cheek. His fingers lingered, caressing her soft skin. “Lou, honey, there’s something I wanna tell you before…well, before anything happens.” He hushed her protest with a finger upon her lips. “I just have to tell you that no matter what, I’ll never stop loving you.” ‘Til my last breath, ‘til I’m called on high
Lou’s body quivered as she let out the breath she’d been holding, afraid when Jimmy continued. “I can’t promise you that I’ll be here for the rest of your life, not when trouble seems to follow me everywhere I go…” He paused, searching her face and finding nothing but love radiating from her beautiful brown eyes. “I can promise you this though. I will love you for the rest of mine.” Lou’s hand reached up and pulled her love closer so that she could kiss him deeply. The contact rocked Jimmy to his very soul, making him send up a prayer. ‘Lord, I know we ain’t been on real good terms and all, but if you let Lou and me make it out of this so I can show her how much she means to me, I’ll be forever grateful.’ Parting, Lou smiled and squeezing his arm, said, “I love you to Jimmy and that will never change. Now,” she crouched up on her feet glancing over the rock at their adversaries, “Let’s get out of here,” and she started shooting. “That’s one thing I love about ya Lou,” Jimmy yelled ducking, just barely being missed by a bullet. “Ya never like to wait around for the other guy to start a fight!” Email Lisa L.HOME |
