Dear Lou,

Something tells me you're drifting away,
That one-day soon you're going to leave
And I don't know what to do or say
To make you change your mind.

I love you and need you so much
That it hurts.
I opened up and took a chance,
Now I'm grasping at what time I have you
left for.
Hoping each day
You'll stay one more...

Kid

Kid didn't know if he'd ever give the note to Lou, but it helped him feel a bit better just putting his feelings down on paper.

For weeks now, he could feel Lou slipping further and further from him.

She had changed since she and Jimmy had escorted Elias Mills the rest of the way to his hanging. He had tried to find out what was bothering her, what had changed between them but she wasn't talking, at least not to him.

He'd caught Lou in quiet conversation with Jimmy at least a dozen times this past week. Was there something going on between the two of them?

It was hard to tell because there had always been something special between them that none of the other riders could quite understand. He knew that Jimmy had feelings for Lou but he wasn't about to get into another fight with him to find out what was going on between the two of them.

The only thing he could do, was let Lou go if that was what she wanted.

Putting the paper in his pocket, he went into the barn to get Katy ready for his run.

As he left the station a sadness unlike any he'd ever felt before settled into his soul, telling him that when he returned, Lou would no longer be his.

Trying to shake off the feeling, Kid couldn't help but hope that when he returned, Lou would still be his for one more day...
