It's strange to think the songs we used to sing, "How could you Kid?" Lou cried loudly, hurt bringing tears to her eyes as she looked at the man who had claimed to love her, the man who said he wanted to have a future with her. What he'd done only days before had cut her to the quick and she didn't know if she could even stand to look at him any more. Kid stood looking at the petite young woman who had captured his heart almost from the first when he'd learned she was female. He hated that he'd caused her so much pain but there was nothing he could say to make it better. Not this time, but he had to try. "It just happened, Lou. I didn't mean for it too, but it did and I'm sorry." Lou turned hardened eyes on him, her arms crossed tightly around her sides. "But why her? Why Sa…Samantha?" There was no way he could explain to Lou how he and the new school teacher ended up 'dancing', and truth be told he didn't see that he needed to go into it with her.
You should've said no, "You should have said no, Kid. Lord knows you've said it enough times to me!" she declared angrily, thinking of all the times he'd told her she couldn't go with him and the others, or that he wouldn't allow her to do something. Kid watched as Lou strode back and forth in agitation. "You had to know that I'd hear about it, for goodness sake! Like any of the others know how to keep a secret!" A frown crossed Kid's face. So that was how she'd found out. Someone at the station had talked and he couldn't help but wonder which of his traitor 'friends' ratted him out. Again, the only thing he could say was, "I'm sorry Lou. I didn't mean for you to get hurt. You know I love you…" When she wouldn't say anything, only glared at him, he changed tactics. "Come on Lou, say something, please? Say you forgive me…" There was no reason the two of them should even be having this conversation she thought, arms still crossed defensively across her chest. Kid shouldn't have to be asking for forgiveness.
You can see that I've been cryin', Kid was getting really worried when Lou wouldn't say anything. He preferred her yelling or even screaming to the silent treatment. When she was like this, she was extremely upset. "I swear Lou, it won't happen again. Not with Samantha or anyone else. Just say that you still love me too." Lou couldn't help shake her head. "Do you honestly believe I'd turn a blind eye and go on as nothing had happened? How can you think we can go on like before after you did what you did?" Kid tried to reach out for her but she pulled away. "I can't do this Kid. Not now, not knowing that you and Samantha slept together." The hurt in Kid's eyes told her that her words had finally gotten through to him. "That's not fair Lou," he said in a quiet, calm voice, devoid of emotion. I can't resist, Lou had turned to walk away but swung around at his words. She couldn't believe the audacity he had saying she wasn't being fair. "Just tell me this Kid, was she worth it?" You should've said no, Her question was too much for him and he spat out, "Was he worth it Lou? Maybe you should have thought twice." Seething with anger at her double standard, Kid stormed away from her and disappeared around the corner of the barn as she was left staring after him.
A whispered, "How the hell does he know?" escaped her lips before she raced into the bunkhouse and threw herself down on her bunk and began sobbing. Email Lisa L.HOME |
