I wrote this for my high school math teacher who died of cancer the year after I had her. My sister was in her class at the time, and she was a favorite of both of us. I gave a copy to her family, and I hope it gave them some comfort. I never planned on making it public, but since it could probably apply to Rachel I thought you all might like it.

My teacher was kind,
Courageous, and moral,
She never said no
To a plea for help.
She was a ready assistant
A motherly sort
And she never got angry
As long as we tried.
She was always on target,
She never misfired,
She taught all she knew
To the students she had.
She gave us her life
Never asking for more
Than our effort in learning.
She gave us her smile,
When we needed a friend.
She gave us her time,
When we needed her aid.
She gave us advice,
When we needed her guidance.
She gave us her life.
She gave us herself.
When I could not
Have understood less,
She stayed by my side
To teach me her craft.
When I could not
Have been more wearisome
She gave of herself
To further my life.
When I could not
Have been more ungrateful
She simply taught on
And bore my dismissal.
When I could not
Have needed her more
She was there.
She gave us her life
Never asking for more
Than our effort in learning.
She gave us her smile,
When we needed a friend.
She gave us her time,
When we needed her aid.
She gave us advice,
When we needed her guidance.
She gave us her life.
She gave us herself.
I will always be grateful
For the effort she made
To befriend a young student
Who wanted anything but
Her sympathy or care.
For in the end she did reach me,
We became friends to the last,
And along with my schoolmates,
I値l miss that helping hand.
She gave us her life
Never asking for more
Than our effort in learning.
She gave us her smile,
When we needed a friend.
She gave us her time,
When we needed her aid.
She gave us advice,
When we needed her guidance.
She gave us her life.
She gave us herself.
So we値l miss her, our teacher,
Our counselor and friend,
Our mentor, our helper,
But perhaps, in the end,
A new day is dawned
To pass on this gift
Of learning and triumph
Of pure, heartfelt lessons.
We値l give what she gave us
To those now in need
We値l pass on this lesson
To all that we meet.
We値l give them our lives
Never asking for more
Than their effort in learning.
We値l give them our smiles,
When they need a true friend.
We値l give them our time,
When they have need of our aid.
We値l give them advice,
When they need our guidance.
We値l give them our lives.
We値l give them ourselves.
Because that痴 what she did;
She gave us her life,
She gave us herself.
