Author's Note: This is a short one-shot of Jimmy remembering his dance with Lou set to the lyrics of Garth Brooks The Dance
That night was stuck in Jimmy's memory and he hoped it always would be there. The dinner had been great and the kiss on the cheek was… well let's just say he wouldn't refuse another one. She was trying to get over the break up with Kid and Jimmy was trying to make her smile. She was beautiful in the blue dress, her brown eyes sparkling, Jimmy wasn't sure if it was the wine or the starlight but he liked the look.
He could still feel her head on his chest. The warmth of her hand in his and the sound of the music that floated around them. There may have been many others on the street that night but all that had mattered at that moment were the two of them. The moon was their spot light and the stars were their silent audience. Their feet moved with graceful clumsiness in the dirt. He could still see her smile and hear her laughter. No words were spoken aloud but his heart spoke volumes to hers. But he didn't know if hers was listening. She would never know what this evening had meant to him. But he knew it wouldn't last. It had felt so right holding her in his arms. She was everything he had every wanted. He had felt like a King guiding his Queen across a ballroom floor. If he had known it wouldn't have lasted beyond that night, he would have held her longer. Danced one more dance. He had wanted so much more with her and his heart was closer to saying more then his mouth was.
Now , he sat and watched her back in Kid's arms. Laughing and smiling. He watched from a distance because the pain could be seen rolling down his cheek. He felt like the King had fallen and the Queen danced into someone else's heart. What if he had spoken his feelings to her? Would she be in his arms now? He wanted her to be happy, that was the greatest way to show someone you loved them, wasn't it?
The memory of that dance and the feel of her in his arms were so real at that moment. That was one memory that will never be replaced. He knew the truth was that he loved her and she loved someone else. He could have missed all this pain but then he would have missed the dance.
